Although I no longer work in the civil society sector, my desire to contribute to the community in which I live remains an important part of both my personal and professional work. It is an honour for me to support and initiate projects that contribute to improving the quality of alternative care in Croatia.

Priznanje "Zvone"

I am one of the initiators and sponsors of the Zvone Award.

The “Zvone” Award is presented to carers working in the alternative care as a sign of gratitude, recognition, and appreciation for their exceptional contribution to the lives of care experienced children and young people.

What makes the “Zvone” Award unique is that it is entirely led by care experienced young people. From the work of the Coordination Committee, through the nomination process, to the final selection of award recipients, the entire process is in their hands, which makes this award unique and authentic.

Through conversations with young people and caregivers involved in the Award, I developed a strong desire to create an educational documentary film about these incredible young people and their caregivers. As I am not a film expert, I invited my dear friend Lidija Špegar, a documentary film director with whom I previously had the opportunity to create the film Okus skrbi, and someone I know will approach this topic with great care, curiosity, and responsibility.

Our initiative has also been supported by the MoSt Association, a non-governmental, non-political, and non-profit organization that for more than 25 years has been implementing projects and programs aimed at improving the lives of children, youth, people living in poverty, and homeless persons, as well as combating social exclusion, poverty, and homelessness. Through its support center for children and youth, specifically the POST program, the MoSt Association has for many years provided support to young people who have left the alternative care system.

Our small team is very much aware that, although the we are highly motivated to bring this film to life, we will not be able to do it alone. Therefore, I hope we will find enough organisations and individuals who are willing to support this non-profit project — as well as those who have always wanted to see their name on the big screen among those who supported the making of the film.

An Educational Documentary Film

Alternative care

Every child has the right to grow up in a family. However, when a child’s safety, well-being, or development is seriously at risk due to abuse, neglect, or harmful living conditions, authorities may decide that separation from the family is necessary to protect the child’s best interests. In such cases, children are placed in alternative care to ensure their basic needs, upbringing, and education are supported.

Caregivers are professionals from different fields who play a crucial role in creating safe, stable, and supportive environments for children. Building trust and meaningful relationships with children and young people who have experienced difficult or harmful relationships is complex and requires strong commitment, expertise, and emotional openness.

Carers courage and determination to confront all the wounds and injuries that children and young people in care have experienced—and the uniqueness of the way they apply balm to those wounds—is something that deserves to be recorded and shared with everyone who is willing to listen with an open heart.
